Bridges and stairways are often used as poetic symbols to define passages in our lives. At Riverbend Sculpture Gardens, there are many small bridges and stone stairways, some with granite steps leading down embankments to the river’s edge. “The Bridge” is a 38 foot long environmental landscape sculpture that crosses the Rio Pueblo into a wooded area with small clearings and meadows where a woodland sculpture garden is planned. The Rio Pueblo originates high in the mountains at Blue Lake and is sacred to the traditional Native American community of Taos Pueblo whose ancestors have inhabited the village for over a thousand years. Standing on either side of the bridge, four stone “sentries” evoke a sense of sacredness and guardianship over the river and the world of nature. When one crosses “The Bridge,” a viewer can look down at the water below their feet through the open-weave metal decking which creates a sense of being encircled by the natural setting.
