“Born of Earth” was created for my neighbor, Mario Suazo, in Taos, New Mexico. Years ago, Mario had an array of large siltstone boulders brought from a ranch he owned in Northeastern New Mexico and had them dumped in the back of his property. They sat for over a decade, becoming overgrown in weeds. When I suggested to Mario that we create something with them, he was interested and the project began. Looking across his pasture, beautiful views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains are in full view when sitting on the large, siltstone bench near the center of the landscape sculpture. In the middle, two enormous locust trees emerge within the artful arrangement of stone. Rising above their surroundings, the trees are an impressive display of life's power and vitality. While both trees stand over 100 ft. tall, the larger exceeds 6 ft. in diameter at the base and is more than 200 years old. The landscape sculpture was completed on Nov. 8, 2024.
