The large quartz boulder on the right has an impressive micaceous face that shimmers in sunlight, which is why I named it Light Becomes Matter. In Dreams of a Final Theory, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg recounts physicists watching electrons absorb photons through a process called photoexcitation. Basically, when photons, or particles of light, are absorbed by electrons within an atom, light essentially becomes matter. The concept made a deep impression and changed my perception of our world, although Steven Weinberg did not describe the process as I have in my explanation.
